Mattie Florence Mitchell Rutherford

Mattie Florence Mitchell Rutherford, 103, of Valdosta and Albany, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 in her home. Mattie was born March 10, 1909 in Turner County to the late Nancy Susan Spillers Mitchell and Walter Louis Mitchell. She was known fondly for her skills as a seamstress and cook. She loved to share these skills helping numerous friends and family members throughout the years.

Survivors include her three daughters and two sons in law, Chris Faulk of Albany, Jean & Curtis Fowler of Valdosta, Joyce & Jimmy Williams of St. Simons and her son, Royce Rutherford of Sylvester, with a dear friend Lois Ridley of Albany; ten grandchildren & their spouses, Alan & Allyson Faulk of Dalton, Erik Faulk, Brent Faulk, both of Albany, Jeana & Clinton Beeland, Donna Fowler, Curt & Jill Fowler, all of Valdosta, Chance Reeves, Jackie & Bryan Sipe, all of St. Simons, Renee Ballesteros of Richmond Hill and Cole Rutherford of Atlanta. Also surviving are four sisters and a brother in law, Mary Julia Dupree of Leesburg, Grace Pauline Southwell of Americus, Janie Susan & Curtis Burgess of Albany and Josephine Simpson of Warner Robins and 13 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Rutherford, a sister, Nettie Bell Mitchell, a brother Walter Oris Mitchell, and two siblings, J.T. Mitchell and Eula Mae Mitchell who died in infancy. Mattie loved her caregivers, Betty Seay, Betty Macon and Linnis Jackson and the family is eternally grateful for their devotion. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services for Mattie will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2012 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. Mac Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10:30 until service time.
