Matilda "Tilly" Dasher Mathis, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2013, at the home of her son, Harris Mathis, Jr., in Wellington, Florida. She was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on January 9, 1923, to the late Rollin Eldridge Dasher and Eunice Rahn Dasher. Her husband, Harris, Sr., predeceased her in 2002. She is survived by her sons Harris, Jr., and Rollin; their wives Susan and Jenny; her grandchildren Mark, Charles, Ben, Christy, Jason, and Reed; and her great-grandson Kayden. Tilly taught Health and Physical Education at Valdosta State University, where she also coached golf and synchronized swimming. She was a member of the men's golf team at Louisiana State University, where she was the first woman to earn an athletic letter. She was also the first woman inducted into the Valdosta-Lowndes County Sports Hall of Fame. She earned a Master's Degree from Florida State University prior to joining the faculty at Valdosta State. Tilly was a long-time active member of First Christian Church and an avid golfer and birdwatcher. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M., May 11, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1905 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31602. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the National Audubon Society.
