Mathel Jr. (Pete) Phillips, 62, of Valdosta, died on Sunday May 25, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Valdosta to the late Barney Maxwell and Rudell Knox Phillips, he was a retired self-employed truck driver and had served in the U.S. Army. He was a Viet Nam veteran and had attended church at both New Seasons Church of God and Swilley Hill Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo Phillips of Valdosta; three sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Laurie Phillips of Adel, Tony and Joyce Phillips of Nashville, and Dusty Phillips of Valdosta; six grandchildren, Michelle Phillips, Michael Phillips, Haley Phillips, Faith Phillips, Zane Phillips, and Joni Lynn Phillips; two great-grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Newsome, Jacqueline Glass, and Joann and Smokey Farmer all of Valdosta; a brother and sister-in-law, Willie James and Sue Phillips; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services for Mr. Phillips will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday May 28, 2008 at New Seasons Church of God. The burial will follow in Fender Cemetery in Lakeland, Georgia.
