Mary Elizabeth McCoy, 87, of Valdosta, GA passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at South Georgia Medical Center with her husband and daughters by her side. Mary was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Mary was born in South Weymouth, Massachusetts on September 16, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Mary Katherine White and Bernard Benedict Merten. Mrs. McCoy grew up in So. Weymouth Massachusetts and attended the Weymouth Schools. After graduating High School she went to The Sacred Heart School of Nursing at Mount Saint Mary in Manchester, NH. Once graduated as a Registered Nurse she enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Wurzberg, Germany as a First Lieutenant working in the MASH Unit. There she met the love of her life Fred McCoy who was an enlisted man also in the medic unit. After completing their tour of service Mary and Fred come back to the states and started their family on Cape Cod where Fred was stationed at Otis AFB. They were stationed at Moody AFB in 1963 but in 1967 Mary moved back to Massachusetts to be with her family when Fred deployed to Vietnam. Fred and Mary moved their family to Eliot, Maine in 1969 where they were stationed at Pease AFB until Fred's retirement in 1974.

Mary was a avid golf enthusiast, golfing at least 2 to 3 times a week usually walking 9, if not all 18 holes. As a member of The Francis Lake Ladies Golf Association Mary participated in many Charitable Tournaments for Breast Cancer and debilitating diseases. Mary also loved to bowl, bowling at least once a week at the Jac's Ladies Bowling League until her health no longer allowed her to participate. Mary also took great pleasure in playing BINGO and no matter where she was would seek out and find a good local BINGO to attend, hoping to win the Cover All!
Mary and Fred had just celebrated their 60th Anniversary in January with their daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, one of her 2 surviving brothers from So. Weymouth, a long time family friend from Cape Cod along with many wonderful close friends from Valdosta all came together for a wonderful celebration.

Mary is survived by her husband, Fred McCoy; 3 daughters Katherine M. Califf and Bill Parmalee of Valdosta, GA. Rosemary and Stephen Wollerscheid of York, Maine. Joanne M. Small and Steven Gagle of Eliot, Maine; Mary also has two out of 5 of her brothers surviving; Bernard and his wife Joan Merten of East Weymouth MA, Michael Joseph Merten of So. Weymouth MA, many nieces and nephews: 8 Grandchildren Nicole and G.C. Ratliff of Valdosta, S. Cody and Jordan Califf, Matthew G. and Lauren Califf all of Valdosta, Stephanie A. and Ryan Berry of York, Maine, Melissa A. Wollerscheid and Nate Hill of So. Berwick, Maine, Erin M. and Brian Grondin of Wells, Maine, Christopher M. Small of Eliot, Maine, Tyler and Lauren Small of So. Berwick, Maine;
5 Great Grandchildren Hayley M. and Granger-Cole Ratliff , Colin W. Grondin, Genevieve G. Berry, Corbyn N. Califf and Little Angels soon to be born.

Mrs. McCoy will be cremated. In lieu of a funeral Mass, the Saturday Vigil Mass at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church on Gornto Road, will be offered for the repose of the soul for Mrs. McCoy.
