Mary Ann Gilbert, of Valdosta, passed away on November 1, 2024 at Langdale Hospice House after a lengthy battle with Lymphoma. Mary Ann was born in Atlanta on Christmas Day in 1933 to Carl D. Dowdy and Lena White Dowdy. She was raised in Atlanta, graduated from Roosevelt High School, and attended what is now Georgia State University. Mary Ann met her future husband, George Gilbert, and they married as he was entering his senior year at the University of Georgia. While still residing in Atlanta they welcomed the first of their two children, daughter Nancee, in 1962 followed by son Stuart in 1963. The family relocated to Valdosta in 1964 where Mary Ann resided for the rest of her life. She retired from the Valdosta City School system after 30 years of service. In retirement she was a volunteer for Hospice of South Georgia for 20 years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge as well as traveling. She was a faithful member of Park Avenue Church. Mary Ann and George recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Mary Ann was a devoted wife and mother who will be forever remembered by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband George, and her two children, daughter Nancee Storey of Valdosta and son Stuart Gilbert of Santa Clara, California as well as a nephew and several nieces. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Roy A. Dowdy and Carl D. Dowdy Jr., her sister Elinor Sanson, all of Atlanta and her grandson, Hayden Storey of Atlanta.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on November 11, 2024, at the River Pavilion at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10-11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia or the Lowndes County Humane Society. Online condolences may be shared at www.mclanecares.com.
