Marvin Ray

Marvin Ray, 70, died on Friday, July 13, 2012, at South Georgia Medical Center. Marvin moved to Valdosta from Southern Illinois University in 1974 to be the Chairman of the Accounting and Finance Department at Valdosta State University. While teaching at VSU, he started two local businesses, Insta-Lube , which were the first 10 minute oil changes in Valdosta. He was an ombudsman for several corporations and enjoyed mentoring his college students. He was an avid golfer and loved spending time on the course with his many golf friends. Marvin was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Vicki Ray of Valdosta; daughters, Karen and Dr. Joseph Hobson of Ft. Myers, Florida, Mendi and Clay Griner of Valdosta; five grandchildren, Hallianne Hobson, J. Henry Hobson, Mary Claire Griner, Ellie Griner and Thomas Ray Griner.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Dr. Phil West will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Sunday from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church 200 West Central Avenue Valdosta GA 31601 or to Valwood School 4380 Highway 41 N Hahira, GA 31632.
