Martha Smith Cooper, 87 of Valdosta, died on Sunday, September 11, 2005 after a lengthy illness. Born on December 11, 1917 in Elizabethtown, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Berry and Alice Rebecca Hanes Smith. Mrs. Cooper was a school teacher in Fargo and in Pearson, teaching a total of 43 years and was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association. She loved to work in her yard and make it beautiful and won yard of the month on several occasions. She loved her neighborhood and watched out for and cared for her neighbors as needed. A member of First United Methodist Church, she was in the Seekers Sunday School class.
Survivors are her husband, Ed Cooper of Valdosta who would have celebrated their 60th Anniversary on September 30; sisters, Lottie Harris of Elizabethtown, NC, Mamie Thompson of Bladenboro, NC; brother-in-law, James Cooper of Savannah and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Mason, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until service time.
