Martha Hamlen, 90, twenty year resident of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Born on October 25, 1914 in Macon, GA, she had lived in Macon for sixty-nine years before moving to Valdosta. She was the daughter of the late Clifford Oliver Hays and Margaret Graves Hays and the widow of Ben Hamlen of Macon. Mrs. Hamlen was an active member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ in Valdosta and previously Liberty United Methodist Church in Macon. She was past President of the Porter Field Garden Club in Macon and a member of the Bibb County Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Gloria Hamlen of Macon, Richard and Jan Hamlen of Valdosta; grandchildren, Christopher Hamlen of Rome, David and Michele Hamlen of Macon, Stephanie and Kevin Weeks of North Palm Beach, FL, Melanie and Brett Olds of Knoxville, TN; two great grandchildren, Andrea Marie Olds, Alyssa Brooke Olds; and a sister, Ruth Hays Smith of Savannah.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Hamlen will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2005 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Officiants will be C. J. Moffett, John Klimko and Alan Smith (Macon). Burial will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Macon. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta.
