Marshall Lee McLane, Sr., age 61, affectionately known as "Fred" by family and close friends, died on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Langdale Hospice House following a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in Atlanta on November 22, 1949, Marshall, a lifelong resident of Valdosta, was the son of the late Louis Clayton McLane and Elizabeth Alford McLane. A graduate of Lowndes High School where he played Viking Football, Marshall had worked for Crane Construction Company and Howell Landscaping and had also owned and operated the Wine and Cheese Basket in downtown Valdosta. For the past 16 years he was employed with Plant Operations at Valdosta State University as a Grounds Supervisor. Marshall loved landscaping and yard work, his own yard was often the envy of the neighborhood. He loved his dogs, John Wayne movies and Notre Dame football. He was an avid NASCAR fan, faithfully following his all time favorite racecar driver, Richard Petty # 43. He enjoyed the local racing scene, coached and played softball for 20 years and was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts serving in the capacity of Assistant Scout Master. Marshall was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lake Park.
Survivors are his wife, Terry McLane, son, Mac McLane, daughters, Kelly McLane, Stephanie Walizer and Kristie Walizer all of Valdosta; brother and sister in law, Charlie and Sheila Connell of North Augusta, South Carolina; sister and brother in law, Ludie and Jimmy Evans of Ballground; brother, Larry and Lina Griner of Valdosta; brother in law, David Bennett of Valdosta, sister in law and brother in law, Debbie and Ricky Wisenbaker of Brooks County; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Carlton Allen will officiate and Mr. Frank George will give the eulogy. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
