Marion Carroll (M.C.) Nelson, 86, of Hahira passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at approximately 9:15 a.m. at the Crestwood Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was born on August 10, 1924 in Clyattville to the late Vera Marion and Tessie Lehman Nelson and had lived in Hahira for several years. Mr. Nelson was veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II and served in action in the South Pacific onboard a Naval Destroyer Class Ship. He was a member of the Hahira First Baptist Church and served as a Hahira City Councilman for District 4 for several years. Mr. Nelson was also a member of the American Legion, a 32nd Degree Mason and past president of the Hahira Historical Society.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nora Elbon Nelson of Hahira, his sister, Faye Nelson Blount of Bel Air, Maryland, his five children and their spouses, Sherry and James Griffith of Warner Robins, Beverly Safier of Orlando, Fla., Russell and Darien Nelson of Hahira, Barbara and Bill Best of Warner Robins, Lawrence and Anita Nelson of Valdosta, ten grandchildren, Jimmy Griffith, Jaime Griffith, Robert Griffith, Teresa Myerscough, Wade Hamilton, Lance Hamilton, Jordan Nelson Hamilton, Amy Orr, Amanda Best and Chandler Nelson and several great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2011 in the chapel of Martin/McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Skip Van Nus officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
