Marie Helms

Marie Helms, 88 of Valdosta, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 31, 2013, after a period of declining health. Born on December 6, 1924 in Geneva, AL to the late John Henry & Reba Whitaker, Mrs. Helms grew up in southern Alabama. Following her marriage to the late James (Pete) Helms, her lifelong love, the Helms soon settled in Albany in the late 1940's. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and was skilled at caring for the needs of her family by cooking, sewing, canning vegetables and all the loving duties of a homemaker. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Valdosta and the First Church of the Nazarene of Albany prior to moving to Valdosta in the mid 1990's.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters in law, Jimmy & Sandra Helms of Milledgeville, and Danny & Bette Helms of Valdosta; a daughter and son in law, Judy & Michael Mason of Dickson, TN; eight grandchildren Joy (Chris) McSwain of Albany, Amy (Josh) Northcutt of Buford, Cindy (Chris) Harrell of Valdosta, Ben (Kim) Helms of Vidalia, Todd (Tonia) Williams of Bolingbroke, Travis (Jessica) Williams of Elizabeth City, NC, Trent (Erika) Williams of Savannah and Tiffany (Jeremy) Wasson of Augusta. Also surviving are a brother, Henry Melvin Whitaker of Montgomery, AL; a sister, Rose Sewell of Slocomb, AL; 17 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Crown Hill Cemetery in Albany. Rev. Hilton Gillespie will officiate. The family will receive friends at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Home in Albany on Wednesday afternoon from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International Bible Society, P.O.
