Valdosta, GA

Maria A. Hughes, age 81, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, surrounded by her family in Valdosta, Georgia, after a brief illness.

Maria was born in Texas to the late Juanita Mejia Rodriguez and Pablo Rodriguez. She was a stay-at-home mother while being the wife to a career Air Force member, and then later worked at the Army Air Force Exchange Service at Moody Air Force Base for 20 years.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew Hughes, Sr.; her children, Andy (Becky) Hughes Jr., Marty (Angela) Hughes and Jeanene/Jeannie (Mike) Mindziak; nine grandchildren -- Hunter, Jonah, Daniel (Emily), Luke, Maegan, Logan (Sarah), Zach (Elissa), Zoey and Zeke; and one great grandchild -- Scotty. Maria is also survived by her siblings Ruben (Francis) Rodriguez, Juan (Gloria) Rodriguez and Catherine (Albert) Miller. She is preceded in death by her sisters Pauline Rolens, Minerva Rodriguez, Ramona Casillas and Gloria Rodriguez. 

Maria was known for her love of crocheting, watching cowboy movies, and reading her Bible. She will be remembered as the #1 fan of her children and grandchildren, a strong prayer warrior and a stalwart fan of the Dallas Cowboys football team. 

A celebration of Maria’s life will be held at 11am on Saturday, November 23, 2024 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10-11am prior to the service. Flowers are welcome or make a donation to Samaritan’s Purse in Maria’s honor. Online condolences may be shared at www.mclanecares.com.
