Margery (Mardi) Barnes, 84 of Valdosta, died on Friday, January 20, 2006 at her residence after a lengthy illness. Born on February 15, 1921 in Keen, NH, she was the daughter of the late James F. and Dorothy Abbott Claverie and the widow of Charles Wesley Barnes, Jr. who died in 1991.
She was raised in Boston, MA and graduated from Thayer Academy in 1939 and Connecticut College in 1943 majoring in Economics. She worked for the Office of Scientific Research and Development in the Radiation Laboratory, as Office Manager of the family business, Barnes Drug Store and as the owner of Barnes Book Store. She was a former member of the Valdosta Junior Service League, a supporter of Annette Howell Center for the Arts, Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, Hospice of South Georgia, Friends of the Library, the Soup Kitchen, was a former member of the Book Review and a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Charles W., III and Sallie Barnes and James Abbott Barnes all of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Mardi Barnes Maxwell and Bert, III, of Macon; grandchildren, Ellen Mixon and her husband Keith of Athens, Charlie Barnes IV of Valdosta, Margery Maxwell of Arlington, VA, Bert Maxwell IV and Dorothy Maxwell both of Macon, James Adam Barnes of Lakeland; a great grandson, Stephen August Mixon of Athens; a sister-in-law, Betty Barnes Nicholson of Atlanta and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2006 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Peter Ingeman, the Rev. Lee Shafer, Deacon Karyl Miller and Deacon Patricia Marks officiating.
