Margaret Smith Hendry

Margaret Smith Hendry, 89, of Valdosta passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born in Valdosta on August 9, 1925 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell J. Smith. Mrs. Hendry was proud to be a 4th generation native of Valdosta/Lowndes County. She started school at the GSWC Training School and then transferred to public schools, graduating from Valdosta High School in 1942. She attended the Georgia Florida Business School and held various secretarial/bookkeeping jobs in Atlanta and Valdosta. Her husband, Alex Hendry preceded her in death.
Margaret Hendry was a devoted homemaker and mother and always enjoyed taking part in the many school projects and activities related to her children. Her hobby was cooking and she published a popular cookbook dedicated to her children who strive to duplicate her considerable culinary talents. She was a lifelong member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ.
She is survived by her five beloved children; Mitchell S. Burns, Melissa B. Epes (Peter) all of Valdosta, Daniel L. Burns, II (Mary) of Hahira, Dale G. Burns of Valdosta, Christopher A. Hendry (Brooke) of Macon; 10-grandchildren, Mary Catherine Burns of Valdosta, Gabriel Burns of Valdosta, Heather Epes of Carrboro, NC, Ashley Burns of Hahira, Lori Burns of Athens, GA, Ben Burns of Hahira, Alyson Burns of Charleston, SC, Emily Burns of Atlanta, GA, Jackson Hendry of Macon, GA, Alexis Hendry of Macon, GA. Mrs. Hendry is also survived by a brother, Mitchell (Lota) Smith of Valdosta and a sister, Morris Smith of Valdosta and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Saturday, November 22, 2014 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. John Klimko officiating. A private committal will be held at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:30am until service time at the funeral home.
