Margaret (Peg) Mayo

April 17, 1933 — January 4, 2021

Margaret (Peg) Mayo, 87, of Valdosta, died at her daughter’s home on Monday, January 4, 2021 of natural causes. Peg was born on April 17, 1933, in Altoona, Pennsylvania to the late Jesse I. and Pauline E. Smeal. She and her husband, Hugh, raised their family in Arlington, Virginia where they resided for 40 years before retiring to Palm Coast, Florida in 1996. Peg enjoyed playing Bridge and tennis, and was an avid Washington Football fan. She was a passionate supporter of the VFW and volunteered countless hours supporting our Veterans. Peg adored her grandchildren, loved to take cruises, dance, listen to music, and never met a stranger. She was a long-standing member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Palm Coast Florida before moving to Valdosta in 2019.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hugh Mayo, sister, Patricia Wiedemer and brother, John “Tucker” Smeal. She is survived by her children, Michelle (Billy) Kirkpatrick of Valdosta, Michael (Sandra) Mayo of Sarasota, Florida, Marcia (Tommy) Smith of Vienna, Virginia; grandchildren, Kristin (Lee) Malchow of Augusta, Kathryn (Josh) Franke of Rochester, New York, Colin Kirkpatrick of Los Angeles, California, Claire (Thomas) Marchman of Augusta, Grayson Smith, of Arlington, Virginia, Connor Smith, of Denver, Colorado, Garrett Smith of Vienna, Virginia; great grandchildren, Hugh and Walter Franke of Rochester, New York.
A funeral mass and internment will be held for Mrs. Mayo at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Palm Coast Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia https://hospiceofsouthgeorgia.org/donate/ or VFW Post 8696, 47 Old Kings Rd. N Palm Coast, Florida 32137.
