Margaret Kunst Hosey, Maj., USAF, died on her 93rd birthday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Lahood’s Fellowship Home. “Maggie” was a native of New York City, daughter of Hungarian Immigrants, and survived crippling polio at an early age. An RN, she had to wait until 1940 to join the U. S. Army, at which time the height minimum changed from five two to five feet. Maggie was barely five feet. Her assignments were in Panama, Japan, England, Germany, and France. Three weeks after D-Day, she volunteered to participate in the air evacuation operation, treating the recently wounded. Major Hosey was privileged to witness the liberation of Nazi POW camps. After retiring from Moody Air Force Base, as Head Nurse, she continued private duty nursing with many Valdosta families. Maggie was a person of service to her country, her community, and untold numbers of individuals needing help. She proactively sought opportunities to assist others. Volunteer work included with Alzheimer Caregiver Timeout, First United Methodist Clothes Closet and Office. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class.
Preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Emily Karch and Elinor Mascellaro.
Survivors included nieces: Ellen Hill, Long Island, NY, Barbara Mahoney, Melbourne Beach, FL, and Margaret Nygren, Gorham, Maine, and nephews: Raymond Karch, Vincent Mascellaro, Edward Mascellaro, all of Long Island, NY.
Friends in Valdosta include Patricia M. Gilliland, Doris Townsend and Laura Leonard.
Funeral services will be held at 4pm, Saturday, October 21, 2006 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery with full military honors. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 3-4pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials maybe made to ACTO, 101 E.
