Margaret Clare McIntyre Culbreth, 81, of Valdosta, died on Monday, October 5, 2009, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Valdosta on June 25, 1928, she was the daughter of the late James Archibold and Julia Tallulah Norton McIntyre. Margaret attended local schools and graduated from Valdosta High School and Georgia State Women’s College, now Valdosta State University. She married Lamar Culbreth in 1949 and for 56 years gave him her unconditional love and support. Early on she taught English in the Valdosta City Schools. Lamar’s career took the family to several locations around the South East before returning home to Valdosta to open Astro Exterminating. She was an integral part in the foundation and early years of the company. In the beginning with one employee, Dad, she said “If a man can land on the moon, we can shoot for the stars”, hence she came up with the name Astro in which she took a great deal of pride.
Bridge was a lifetime pursuit which she thoroughly enjoyed. However, the majority of her life’s efforts were invested in the raising and nurturing of her children and grandchildren. She was a kind and gentle soul and was loved by all who knew her. She perfected a lost art, listening. She was a wonderful Christian and long time member of First Baptist Church. She was a truly beautiful Southern lady inside and out and will live forever in the hearts of her children and grandchildren.
Survivors are her daughter and son in law, Laura and Kim Perlman of Valdosta, two sons and daughters in law, Rick and Sara Culbreth, Arch and Stefanie Culbreth of Savannah; six grandchildren, Melissa and Pete Thomas of Thomasville, Rick Culbreth, Jr. of Atlanta, Allison Leigh and John Chan of Richmond, VA., Joshua Culbreth of Savannah, Addy Perlman of Valdosta, Blake Culbreth of Savannah; great granddaughter, Ella Clare Thomas of Thomasville; sister, Frances M. Dees of Valdosta. She was preceded in death by husband, Alvin Lamar Culbreth, daughter, Ella Culbreth Bullington, granddaughter, Molly Culbreth, sisters, Eleanor M. Davis and Hattilu M. Moore, and brother, John W. McIntyre.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2009, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Phil West and Reverend Mac Weaver will officiate.
