Marcelle L. Dixon

Marcelle L. Dixon, 95, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at Fellowship Home in Brooks County. Born in Miller County to the late Jesse & Cora Everson Layton, she has lived in this area for the past 70 years. After high school in Miller County, Marcelle moved to Valdosta to take a job as a telephone operator with Southern Bell. While working there, she met and started dating John Dixon. They were married on August 29, 1957, at the home of his uncle, who was a Methodist Minister, Rev. D. R. Dixon of Ray City. They were married for nearly 60 years prior to his death in 2017. Marcelle soon attended and graduated from beauty school and became a beautician. Also an accomplished seamstress, she operated her beauty shop from her home for nearly 20 years. Marcelle was a long-time member of Northside Baptist Church.

Survivors include a niece and two nephews, Cindy Layton Suminski of North Carolina, Tony Layton and Mike Layton, both of St. Augustine, FL. Also surviving are life long friends, Joe & Pat Mullis of Valdosta, Jay & Joyce Howe of Conyers, and Fay Schartel of Valdosta, and she was also loved and will be remembered by many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, John R Dixon, Jr. The family is very grateful for the loving care Marcelle received from the staff and family at Fellowship Home and Pruitt Hospice.

A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Rev. Roger Mays will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fellowship Home, at 470 Fellowship Home Lane, Valdosta, GA 31602. Condolences may be conveyed to the family on the obituary page of www.mclanecares.com.
