Mamie G. Sorrell

October 6, 1919 — March 11, 2007

Mamie Hamner Sorrell, 87, of Hahira, died at home Sunday, March 11, 2007. She was born on October 6, 1919 in Brooks County to the late Carl and Dot Sineath Hamner. Mrs. Sorrell owned and operated Carousel florist, sweet and gift shop for many years, worked at Smith Hospital for twenty seven years as a nurse and purchasing agent and organized and was president of the Pink Ladies Auxilliary. She worked with the City of Hahira for fourteen years, was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Hahira and had served as church clerk. Mrs. Sorrell served and organized the Hahira Honey Bee Festival, was on the board of directors of the Hahira Chamber of Commerce and was a charter member of the Historical Society.

She is survived by one daughter and son in law, Melba and Sam Locher of Hahira, two sons and one daughter in law, Billy T. Sorrell of Morven and David and Judy Sorrell of Cherry Lake, FL, twelve grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren, one sister, Laverne Yost of Hahira, seven sisters in law, Alma Hamner of Cecil, Mary Ingram, Dorothy Jordan and Louise Lawson, all of Hahira, Christine Denmark of Valdosta and Virginia Smith of Tallahassee, FL, and Barbara Sorrell of Valdosta, special friend, Drexel Roberson of Alapaha. Mrs. Sorrell is preceded in death by her husband, William I. “Bill” Sorrell, two daughters in law, Leola Sorrell and Sandy Sorrell, one son in law, Bobby Joe Webb, two sisters, Willene Pope and Clyde Jackson, three brothers, Hugh Hamner, Claude Hamner and Charlie Hamner.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at two p. m. in the chapel of the Martin McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Cleo Hughes, Reverend Arthur Knight, Mr. John Adams and Mrs. Eula Copeland officiating. Burial will follow in Sardis Cemetery near Berlin in Colquitt County, GA. The family will receive friends from six until nine p. m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
