Lynn Smith Charles passed away on June 2, 2024, at the age of 91 after a short illness. He was so much to so many people. As a husband, he was devoted to his wife of 47 years. As a father, he was kind, caring and always willing to help out or give advice. As a grandfather and great grandfather, he was absolutely smitten.
Lynn was born on January 11, 1933, in Rogersville, Tennessee. He had a large family of siblings and cousins, and they remained close even after he joined the Air Force and lived all over the world. Lynn, also known fondly as Charlie, met the love of his life and settled in Valdosta, Georgia. It was here where he retired from the Air Force and built their lifelong home where they raised their three children.
Lynn was so dedicated to the Air Force that he continued to work on airplanes at Moody AFB as a civil servant for 20 years past his retirement. He was often a man of few words but if you ever started a conversation with him about planes, he had a lot of knowledge to share.
Lynn enjoyed spending time at the wood hobby shop at Moody AFB. He not only built his home, but he also made numerous cherished items including furniture and memorial flag boxes.
As a Mason and Shriner, Lynn loved to support his brothers and others in the community. He had so much joy driving the little cars in various parades. He was dedicated to attending meetings and was the secretary and treasurer for many years for the Moody Lodge Masons.
Lynn and his wife were active members of Bemiss United Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Chub Charles, daughters, Beth Lind (Jeff), and Britta Mink (Derek Pickup), grandsons Drew Johnson and Dalton Johnson (Gabriela), great-granddaughter Camila Johnson, sister-in-law Sally Roberts, brother-in-law Eddie Knowlton (Sandra), and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He had an especially close relationship with niece Judy Bowery (Roger) and their daughter, Amy. He was preceded in death by his son, Darrin Charles, his parents, and all of his siblings.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at McLane Riverview Mausoleum. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10-11am. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.mclanecares.com.
