Lydia Stevens, 88, of Valdosta, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2012, at Smith Northview Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born November 7, 1923 in Ashburn, a daughter of Ottis Burch and Ruth Booth Burch Sumner. Ms. Stevens had worked for the Juvenile Courts in Jacksonville, FL, later volunteering with the suicide hotline in Jacksonville and with Alzheimer's patients in Tifton. She was very proud of publishing the two memoirs of her youth, her personal experiences and those of Ashburn residents during World War II, and sharing them with family and friends. Ms. Stevens loved her dogs, reading and sharing her home baked cranberry nut bread. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
She is survived by one son, Tom Stevens and wife Ellen of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Allison Curry Rana and husband Imran of Ashville, NC, Will Burch Stevens of Atlanta, Mike Stevens of Tifton, and Matt Stevens and wife Patty of Jacksonville, FL; one great-granddaughter, Lilly Rana; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Stevens of Jacksonville, FL; one sister, Martha "Teeny" Chaffin of Atlanta; four nephews and one niece, Lee Bradley and wife Barbara of Valdosta, Gail Hudgens and husband John of Albany, Burch Bradley and wife Debbie of California, Tom Chaffin and wife Metta of Atlanta, and Bobby Chaffin of Atlanta. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Frank Stevens; a son, Benjamin Eugene Stevens; and a sister, Mavis Bradley.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 8, 2012, at Christ Episcopal Church, with The Very Rev. Denise Ronn officiating. Ms. Stevens' family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church fellowship hall. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
