Lt. Col. Vernon Pizer, U. S. Army (Retired)

Lt. Col. Vernon Pizer, U. S. Army (retired) 87 of Valdosta, died on Sunday, September 4, 2005 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, the former Adair Myddelton Nunnally, two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Karen Nunnally of Roberta, David and Dawana Nunnally of Quitman; a brother-in-law, Dr. Noah Langdale, Jr. of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Vicky, Casey, Brittney and Justin Nunnally and several nephews. Col. Pizer was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Marguerite Langdale, and by his brother, Maurice Pizer.

Col. Pizer was born in Boston, MA, on February 20, 1918, to the late Jack and Florence Stearns Pizer. He attended George Washington University and entered the Army as an Infantry Officer in 1941, serving in North Africa and Europe during World War II. Following the war, he served abroad in various NATO assignments, including Vienna, Paris and Izmir, Turkey. He retired from active duty in 1963 at which time he was the spokesman for Allied Land Forces Southeastern Europe.

Following his retirement, he lived in Washington, D. C., where he continued to pursue his second career as an author and journalist. He has written eleven books and scores of articles for magazines ranging from Readers Digest and Esquire to BioScience and the London Sunday Pictorial. Several of his works have been translated and published abroad. He has also edited texts for American University, Smithsonian Institution and several nonprofit organizations. In addition, he completed special writing projects for the Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of Defense.

A member of Christ Episcopal Church, he was also a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, a “Golden Owl” member of the National Press Club, longtime member of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and had served on the Board of Valdosta State University Foundation. In addition, he was a Patron of Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts and L.V.A.C., a member of Lowndes County Historical Society, a member of Military Officers Association of America and of the Valdosta Country Club.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at Christ Episcopal Church. The Rev. Peter Ingeman and The Rev. Lee Shafer will officiate. A private interment will be held at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The funeral home will be open for visitation Tuesday evening until 9 p.m. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Hospice of South Georgia or the charity of your choice.
