Lowell M. Upchurch

August 4, 1937 — November 9, 2009

Lowell M. Upchurch, 72, of Clyattville, died on Monday, November 9, 2009, at his home after a short illness. Born in Clyattville on August 4, 1937, he was the son of the late Lebus and Willa Taylor Upchurch. Mr. Upchurch was a graduate of Clyattville High School and had attended Valdosta State University. He was a member of Clyattville United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Upchurch served on the Lowndes County Family and Children Services Board and the Lowndes County Zoning Board. Formerly a Lowndes County Deputy Sheriff, Justice of the Peace and Postmaster of Clyattville, Mr. Upchurch had operated Upchurch Grocery Store, the Clyattville Skating Rink and the Owens-Illinois Cafeteria. He owned Big Burger, The Fish Net and Pat’s Restaurant.

Survivors are his wife, Patsy Peters Upchurch of Clyattville; a sister, Margaret Newton of Millen, Georgia, sister-in-law, Carolyn Upchurch of Charleston, South Carolina, Leona Upchurch of Valdosta; nieces and nephews, Sally and Bill Jorgenson of Sun City, Arizona, Raymond and Sarah Upchurch, Mary Frances Upchurch and Irvin Coody, Lebus Mark and Debbie Upchurch, Susan Elizabeth Upchurch and James Moore all of Clyattville, Cassie and David Johnson of Charleston, South Carolina, Matt and Penny Newton of Richmond Hill, Georgia, Rodney and Linda Newton of Jefferson, Georgia, Steve and Patsy Newton of Dunwoody, Georgia; numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Terrell Upchurch, William T. Upchurch, Lebus Gene Upchurch, and a sister, Sara Upchurch Smith.

Funeral services will be held in Valdosta on Sunday, November 15, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Swilley Hill Cemetery. Reverend Mollie Danner will officiate. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
