Louie Carlton Flythe, Sr.

January 13, 1924 — October 5, 2020

Louie Carlton Flythe, Sr., 96, of Valdosta, died on Monday, October 5, 2020 at Langdale Hospice House after a period of declining health. Born in Hahira on January 13, 1924 to the late John Claude Flythe and Bessie Claude Bonner Flythe, he had been a lifelong resident of this area. Louie graduated from Hahira High School in 1943 and soon joined the Merchant Marines and served from Dec. 25, 1944 until Oct. 20, 1945, at the end of World War II. He then returned to Valdosta and in the early 1950’s he began a career at Georgia Power Company that would span 35 years, until his retirement in 1988 as the Procurement Supervisor. Then in 1992, Louie began a rewarding retirement career as a bailiff at the Lowndes County Courthouse until his health forced him to leave that position in 2016. He was a stockholder in the Ocean Pond Fishing Club for over 50 years where he enjoyed many wonderful days fishing. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 13 and a recipient of the Liberty Bell Award in 2006 which is given by the Valdosta Bar Association. Louie was a faithful member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ for over 50 years.
Survivors include his son and daughter in law, Louie, Jr. and Sharon Flythe of Valdosta, a daughter and son in law, Ann & Bobby Dasher of Valdosta, two granddaughters and their spouses, Haley & Caleb Morris of Thomasville and Deann & Jim Scruggs of Valdosta; and one great granddaughter, Elle Scruggs of Valdosta. Also surviving is a brother and sister in law, Charles & Laura Flythe of Valdosta; a sister Dorothy Flythe Johnson of Quitman; and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends. He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Betty Nell McLeod Flythe, four brothers, George Flythe, James Flythe, Edwin Flythe and John Flythe; two sisters, Margaret Flythe Whaley and Marion Flythe Mueller.
The funeral for Mr. Flythe will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct 7, 2020 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mr. John Klimko, Dr. Byron Brown and Mr. Jerry DeLoach will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 5 - 7 pm. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Central Avenue Church of Christ or Hospice of South Georgia.
