Lois Nichols Henley, 95, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2010, in Atlanta, GA. Lois was born on October 17, 1914, in Belle Plaine, Iowa, to Fredrick and Mayme Cerny. She attended High School in Davenport, Iowa. On September 9, 1936, she married Donald Eugene Nichols at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport. They had first met as teens in 1930, when he shoved her off a toboggan.
Mr. Nichols was a manager for Nichols and Nichols Plywoods of Chicago, IL and was eventually assigned to manage Valdosta Plywoods, Inc., in Valdosta, GA. While raising her family there, Lois became involved in many social activities. She was a member of the Valdosta Country Club, the Book of the Month Club and the St. John's Altar Society at St. John's Catholic Church where she was an active and faithful member. She loved giving dinner parties and playing bridge with her Bridge Club friends. She also enjoyed reading, movies, music, dancing, knitting, and traveling. Her favorite weekend "getaways" with Don were to Atlanta, New Orleans, or Ponte Vedra, FL. A deserved break from her lively boys. Don passed away in Valdosta in 1986.
Lois was a fabulous cook and was always in the kitchen preparing meals for her family and their friends. She wore out two KitchenAid MixMasters, baking cakes and goodies for others. Her recipe box is sure to be coveted by all.
Lois worked for many years for Dr. "Smut" Smotherman in Valdosta. After retiring, she married Earl L. Henley of Chicago, an old High School friend. When Earl retired, they moved from Chicago to Venice, FL, where they spent many happy years. Eventually they moved to Georgia to be closer to "her boys". Mr. Henley passed away in Atlanta in 2009 at age 96.
Lois will always be loved and remembered for her sense of humor, determination, and devotion to family. She is survived by her six sons, James C. Nichols, Donald E. Nichols, Jr., Lyle D. Nichols, Gary F. Nichols, John C. Nichols, and Greg H. Nichols, as well as 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. May she rest in peace.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 22, from 5 to 7pm, at McLane Funeral Services in Valdosta, with a private burial on Saturday, January 23rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Altus Hospice, 5411 Northland Dr. , Atlanta, GA 30342.
