Lois Barton Houston, 83, of Valdosta died on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center following a short illness. She was born on May 20, 1927 in Lakeland, Georgia to the late Talmage and Maude Touchton Barton. She was a 1949 graduate of Georgia Southern University, a retired Elementary School Teacher, did volunteer work for Fargo Senior Citizen Group making quilts and worked in the Brunswick Shipyard during World War II. Mrs. Houston enjoyed traveling with the Valdosta Christian Tours and loved her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph S. Houston, M.D., of Valdosta; two sons, Dennis Houston of Griffin & Wallace Houston of McDougal; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra & Greg Houston West of Dothan, Alabama, daughter, Susan Houston of Albany; seven grandchildren , Heather Houston, Ava Castleberry, Jody Houston, Alden West, Warren Houston, Anna West and Riley Houston; four great-grandchildren, Gavin Backs, Emory Backs, Isabella Castleberry and Audrey Castleberry; two sisters, Bobbie Spikes of Fargo and Betty Giles of Blakely. Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by a sister, Monett Tison and a brother, Wallace Barton.
Services for Lois Barton Houston will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Carroll Joy officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The American Diabetes Assoc., 8384 Bay Meadows Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32256 or the Children's Hospital of Alabama, 1600 Seventh Ave. South, Birmingham, AL 35233.
