Logan Wayne Thackrey

June 26, 1919 — March 21, 2008

Logan Wayne Thackrey, 88, of Valdosta, died Friday, March 21, following a lengthy illness. He was born at Mount Ayr, Iowa on June 26, 1919, the son of the late Logan Henry and Frankie May Mumford Thackrey. He retired as daylight Foreman, Kansas City Air Mail Facility, Kansas City, MO in 1974. He honorably served the United States of America with 21 years in the Army air Corps, Air Force and Reserve. He fought in WWII and the Korean Conflict as a Navigator on B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-29s and B-50s. He retired as a Major, completing an impressive 30 combat missions in WWII.

He was an active member of Northside Baptist Church where he was an inactive deacon. He was a volunteer with Hospice of South Georgia and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Lowndes County. He was a Member of Reserve Officers association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a charter member of the Valdosta Chapter of Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). He was also an associate member of the Valdosta/Lowndes Retired Educators Association and Berry College Alumni Association. In addition to these duties he was an accomplished artist and photographer.

He is survived by his present wife, Betty Meeks Thackrey of Valdosta, daughter, Ginger Lee Thackrey of Gulfport, MS, son and daughter-in-law, Barton Wayne Thackrey (Kathy) of Jonesboro. He is also survived by four loving grandchildren; Tiffani (Stephen) Stokes, Katie Thackrey, Andrew Thackrey and a great granddaughter, Madeline Stokes, all of Hampton, surviving in-laws include Ellen and William Raiford of Jacksonville, FL along with many nieces and nephews. Mr. Thackrey also leaves behind three step-sons, Gary Bass Jr. (Martha) of Marietta, Michael Bass of Valdosta, and Mark Bass (Michele) of Duluth, four grandchildren, Jennifer and Justin Bass of Marietta, Jacob Bass of Duluth, Evan Malone of Valdosta, and great-grandchild, Isaac Lowry, Marietta. In addition to his family he is survived by a host of loving friends who will remember him fondly. Mr. Thackrey was preceded in death by his first wife of nearly 48 years, Ruth Alice King Thackrey, and by three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11am, Monday, March 24, 2008 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Stephens and Rev. Bob Willis officiating. Burial will be in the Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Moultrie at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6-8pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia/Langdale Hospice House, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602.
