Edna Elizabeth (Liz) Mackey, 70, passed away at home Friday, April 21, 2006 of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare disease which she fought for six years. She was being cared for at home by her husband Bob, with help from her daughter Lynn, and family and friends. She is now free to walk, talk, dance, sing and do all those things that PSP slowly took away from her.
Liz was born in Atkinson, Georgia, July 9, 1935, one of nine children born to Willy and Esther Luke. Liz was retired from barbering after being diagnosed with PSP.
Survivors are her husband and soul mate, Bob Mackey of Valdosta, son, Aaron Rice and family of Douglasville, son, Frankie Rice and family of Hahira, daughter, Lynn Dupree of Valdosta, son, Steve Rice and family of Hiram; four stepchildren, Robert Koch and family of Martins Ferry, Ohio, Amy McConn and family of Bridgeport, Ohio, Thomas Mackey and family of Reidsville, North Carolina, Jeffery Mackey and family of Reidsville, North Carolina. She is also survived by four sisters and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Vandy and sister, Dot.
By request Liz will be cremated. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Sunday, April 23, 2006, at 3:00 o’clock p.m. with Pastor Carroll Joye officiating.
