Lilla Mae Prater Rice, 90. of Valdosta, died at Fellowship Home on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Born in Weogufka, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late John Archibald Prater and Nora Frances Blankenship Prater. Mrs. Rice graduated from Auburn University with her Bachelors and Masters in Education. She taught at schools in Alabama for over thirty years. She was very active in Civitan Club and was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta and Kappa Kappa Iota Education Sororities. Lilla loved to share her talent and knowledge of needlework, especially tatting, at the Gillespie Center. She was an avid gardener and loved reading and crossword puzzles. Mrs. Rice was a member of Prattmont Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and ladies Bible classes. She attended Covenant Baptist Church in Valdosta until her health prevented her from getting out.
Survivors are her husband of 66 years, Douglas A. Rice of Valdosta; a son and daughter in law, Don and Nancy Rice of St. Clare, Michigan, a son, Larry Rice (Nina Needham) of Rockford, Tennessee; a daughter and son in law, Darlene and Randall Bice of Valdosta; grandchildren, Donna Rice of Brooklyn, New York, Shari (James) Dodson of Eldersburg, Maryland, Joe (Tonya) Rice of Knoxville, Tennessee, Allen Bice of Valdosta, John Bice of Annapolis, Maryland, Tim Bice of Valdosta, Leslie Kirk of Knoxville, Tennessee, Sherri (Jason) Coggin of Knoxville, Tennessee; sister in law, Lillian Green Prater of Weogufka, Alabama; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond Prater, W.R. Prater, Ronald Prater and sister, Eunice King.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 3 p.m. EST in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend David Cummings and Reverend Randy Tucker will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 2 p.m EST until 3 p.m. EST.
