Lewis G. Russell, 88, of Valdosta died Monday, October 11, 2010 at Shand's Hospital in Gainesville, FL. He was born on November 9, 1921 in Bibb County to the late Rufus and Ola Mae Phillips Russell. Mr. Russell was retired from Southern Bell after 35 years of service. He was a World War II Army veteran and was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and numerous other medals. Mr. Russell was a Mason and a Shriner. He enjoyed his life as an active golfer.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rachel Brown Russell of Valdosta, one brother, Milton Russell of Griffin and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his step son, Ozzie "Buster" Cowart.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 14, 2010 at ten a. m. at the graveside at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Reverend John McGowan officiating. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends from six until eight p. m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Dougherty Masonic Lodge # 591, P. O. Box 591, Albany, GA 31702 or to the Hasan Shrine Temple, 1822 Palmyra Road, Albany, GA 31701 or to the charity of your choice.
