Levy Burnice (L.B.) Hiers, 84, died Friday, December 14, 2007 at South Georgia Medical Center. Born on August 14, 1923 in Ellenton, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Levy Burnice and Gwendolyn Hiers Beard. Mr. Hiers retired as a supervisor at Valdosta Plywood for 21 years and also owned and operated L.B.’s Lounge & Package Store in Lowndes County. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran who served at Iwo Jima and other areas in the Pacific and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a lifetime member of VFW, American Legion and Amvets. Mr. Hiers was a member of First Chirstian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillian Jones Hiers of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Avy Hiers; daughter, Ann Hiers Sutton; daughter-in-law, Elverna Hiers all of Valdosta; grandchildren, Clifford and Jennifer Hiers of Lake Park, Kim and Jackie Coker of Sylvester, Wendy and Jimmy Hiers, Jr. of Pensacola, FL, Chris Hiers of Morganton, NC, Pam and Tony Brantley of Lawrenceville; eleven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Earnest Hiers, Sr. of Columbia, SC and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Burnice (Skeeter) Hiers and two sisters, Thelma Blouvelt and Helen Bell.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 17, 2007 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Chris Michael officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens.
