SMSGT Leonard I. Jacobs, Ret. USAF, 85, of Hahira, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at his home. He was born in Clothier, West Virginia on August 2, 1939, to the late Ira Jacobs and Maude Ethel Hatfield Jacobs. He was the oldest of eight children, and a very joyful person. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served for 28 years. He also worked for Valdosta State Prison, The Lowndes County Sheriff's Department and Wild Adventures. Mr. Jacobs was an avid fisherman; he loved to travel and enjoyed the birds that frequented his yard. He and his late wife Carol were actively involved in the community of Hahira and served on the Hahira Honeybee Festival Committee for over 25 years.
Mr. Jacobs is survived by his daughters Diana Johnson (Jon), of Hershey, PA, and Keri Hales, of Punxsutawney, PA; his grandchildren, Jessica Vinton (Andrew) of Palmyra, PA, Aren Johnson (Katie) of Poolesville, MD, Ryne Johnson, of Poolesville, MD, Liam Hales and Laia Hales, both of Punxsutawney, PA; his great-granddaughter Lucille Vinton, and a great-granddaughter on-the-way. He will be remembered by his siblings, Shirley Keeton, of Worthington, KY, Leon Jacobs (Jan) of Mounds View MN, Leroy Jacobs (Nancy) of Lloyd, KY, Paul Jacobs (Barbara) of Bridgeport, OH, Freda Shackleford of Yorktown, VA, and Doris Hall of Greenup, KY. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive, and an aunt, Ella Frances Gentry, of Lakeland, FL. He will also be missed by close family friends, Karen, Jason, Shelbi, and Ethan Yawn, Emily Waller and Mae, and his special Caretaker Tannis Scott who was more like family than a caretaker.
Mr. Jacobs was preceded in death by his wife, Carol J. Jacobs, his parents, and a sister, Reable Copley.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, in the chapel of the Martin McLane Funeral Home in Hahira with Reverend Mike Davis officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his honor to The Wounded Warrior Project.
