Lena Maude Hiers Harrell, 93, of Valdosta, died at her home on Friday, February 16, 2007. Born in Lake Park on March 11, 1913 she was the daughter of the late Charles Archard and Lena Corbett Hiers. Mrs. Harrell was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Valdosta State University, then known as George State Womens College. She was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church, when she served as WMU director, and also taught Sunday School for over 50 years. When Lee Street Baptist Church and Azalea City Baptist Church merged into Crossroads Baptist Church, she maintained both her membership and Christian fellowships there. She served as PTA President on several occasions for the Valdosta School System. She taught first and fifth grades for 10 years in surrounding school systems including Ray City, Hahira, Lake Park and Valdosta. She enjoyed volunteering by playing the piano and singing at numerous area nursing homes, and received the Holly Hill Volunteer of the Year Award. Mrs. Harrell was a member of the Golden Strummers where she treasured the opportunity to perform musically with others of her generation. Her loving influence was evident throughout her life and will continue to have an impact on everyone who knew her.
Mrs. Harrell is survived by her sons and daughter in law, Ike and Marguerite Harrell of Valdosta, W. Larry Harrell of Staunton, Virginia; grandchildren, Bonny and David McKinnon of Dallas, Georgia, Amy Houston and Leah Shaw of Valdosta; great granddaughters, Shelton Houston and Suzanna Shaw of Valdosta; sister, Grace Tucker of Monticello; sisters in law, Martha Harrell Davenport of Chesapeake, Virginia, Louise Lyles of Lake Park; and a brother in law, John Locklear of LaGrange. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ike B. Harrell, Sr., four sisters, Lois McCranie, Elizabeth Whidden, Kathleen Copeland McCranie, Carolyn Locklear, and a brother, C. A. Hiers, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 19, 2007, at 2:00 o’clock p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Edward T. Elmendorf, III , Reverend Phil West and Reverend Charlie Scarborough will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to United Hospice or to Crossroads Baptist Church.
