Leland Jerome Oglesby

Leland Jerome Oglesby, 72, of Hahira, GA passed away on Monday, August 10, 2015 at South Georgia Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born on April 17, 1943 in Hahira, GA to the late Leland and Bonnie Coppage Oglesby.
Jerome was known throughout the community for his work at Val Optics. Mr. Oglesby and Mr. Clarence Jones founded the optical shop in 1983 where they dispensed a joke, story, or advice with each pair of glasses for over twenty years. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Sergeant Oglesby served in the US Army and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was a member of the Old Reliables 9th Infantry. Mr. Oglesby earned a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation, Combat Infantryman, Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam Service and National Defense Service Medals among others. He was a member of the American Legion and the Hahira Historical Society.
Jerome loved his family. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Margaret Gay Mathis Oglesby of Hahira, two sons, James (Tamara) Oglesby of Hahira and Ron (Chrissi) Oglesby of Smyrna, DE, daughter, Elizabeth Oglesby (Donny) Emanuel of Hahira, grandchildren, Walter Oglesby of Augusta, GA, Brenden Oglesby of Smyrna, DE, Jacob Oglesby of Hahira, Jaylee Oglesby of Hahira and Sadie Emanuel of Hahira, brother, Ronnie (Sandra) Oglesby of Adel and sister, Teresa (Mike) Boughton of Valdosta, favorite Aunt and Uncle, Ola and Webster Johnson of Hahira.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 13, 2015 from Noon until two p. m. at the Martin McLane Funeral Home in Hahira. The memorial service will follow at three p. m. at Fellowship Baptist Church.
