Lawton Hughes

December 5, 1914 — January 9, 2005

Lawton Hughes, 90 of Valdosta, died on Sunday, January 9, 2005 at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Born on December 5, 1914 in Echols County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Lula Lightsey Hughes. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Forrest Street Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Buddy Turner of Lake Park; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Barbara Hughes of Hahira, Wayne and Sheree Hughes of Valdosta; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; three sisters, Elsie Carter and Bonnie Carter of Statenville and Eunice Glisson of Valdosta; two brothers, L. A. Hughes and Buddy Hughes both of Valdosta and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 ½ years, Mary Dell Hughes.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend L. C. Hughes and Reverend Eldridge Lyons officiating. Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
