Lawrence S. (Larry) Leonard, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, 87, of Valdosta, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. Larry, a graduate of San Diego State University and Oregon State University, worked as a chemical engineer for Shell Oil, ultimately managing the construction of the world’s second Flexi Coker. Retiring from Shell after 31 years, he then worked for 10 years with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Larry most recently taught math at Georgia Military College.
Preceded in death by Donna, his wife of 61 years, Larry is survived by his sister, Judi (Barry) Kanne of Atlanta, daughter Lori of Concord, Virginia, sons Dave (Jody) of Water Valley, Mississippi, and Joe of Inverurie, Scotland, 6 grandchildren (Lisa, Jessica, Eva, David, Jilli, and Eli) and 5 great-grandchildren (Bella, Marcus, Willow, Freya, and Eibhinn).
Larry and Donna were very involved in the Valdosta community. They enjoyed and generously supported Theatre Guild Valdosta, VSU Theatre and Symphony, Peach State Summer Theatre, and Friends of the Library. Larry was active in HAM radio, as well as a student with Learning in Retirement, and played duplicate bridge.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Burial will be private. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com. Carson McLane.
