Lavon Prine, 78, of Echols County, died on Friday, December 25, 2020 after a very short battle with COVID-19. Born in Valdosta on September 20, 1942 to the late Jackson Rudolph & Catherine Kinsey Prine, he had been a lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Prine grew up in Valdosta and attended Valdosta High School in the mid 1950’s before joining the U.S. Navy. After a brief stint in the Navy he returned to this area and soon started working with the Lowndes County Sherriff’s Department. He worked for several years with Lowndes County before joining the Georgia State Patrol in the early 1970’s. He worked for the GSP for nearly 30 years and retired as a Sargent 1st Class and had served as the Post 31 Commander here in Valdosta. Lavon loved being outside, whether making his yard beautiful or hunting and fishing, but he was especially devoted to his family and spending time with them and his friends. He was very active at his church, Sardis Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Betty Jo Vickers Prine of Echols County, his son Shane Prine of Nashville, TN; his daughter and son in law, Shannon & John Harrison of Douglas; two grandchildren, Colton Merritt and Kate Merritt; two step sons and daughter in law, Dennis & Sandra Griffin and Joey Griffin all of Cook County; four step grandchildren, Caleb, Zack, Cody and Austin Griffin, all of Cook County and his sister, Lougene & Jerry Spray of Alabama. Also surviving are a number of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral for Mr. Prine will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Sardis Baptist Church in Echols County. Rev. Mike Everson and Rev Mickey Corbett will officiate. Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at McLane Lakewood Funeral Home from 5 until 7 pm on Monday, December 28, 2020. The family requests that masks be worn, and social distancing be followed at all services for Mr. Prine.
