Lavon Hughes

Lavon Hughes, 68, of Leesburg, died on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. Born on January 9, 1942 in Valdosta, he was the son of the late L.A. and Effie Vann Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Alpha Baptist Church in Leesburg where he served as a Deacon and sang with the gospel group "Alpha Echoes". He worked as a building material salesman for Woodford Plywood. He enjoyed fishing and building, his grandchildren, watching softball on TV and he was an avid John Wayne fan.

Survivors are his wife, Shirley Hughes, son and daughter in law, Greg and Barbara Hughes, grandchildren, Heather Hughes and Mary Hughes all of Leesburg; brother and sister in law, Louie and Angie Hughes, nephew, Zachary Hughes, niece, Lauren Hughes all of Nashville; aunts, Eunice Glisson and Bonnie Carter of Valdosta; uncle, Buddy Hughes of Valdosta; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lula Hughes.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Steve Futch and Reverend Cory Thomas will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 -8 p.m. at Alpha Baptist Church, 182 Academy Drive, Leesburg, and also on Tuesday, prior to the service from 2-4 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
