Laurie Smith "Shorty" Hiers, 84, of Valdosta died Wednesday, September 28, 2011. He was born on December 17, 1926 in Jennings, Florida to the late Philip Edgar, Sr. and Fannie Ophelia Alderman Hiers and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Hiers was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church and retired from Southern Bell. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. Mr. Hiers enjoyed working in his woodworking shop, playing golf, keeping an immaculate yard and loving on his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Martha Sanders Hiers, children and their spouses, Terry and Cindee Hiers of Valdosta and Debbie and Mark Moulton of Macon, five grandchildren, Heather (Matt) Dorsey, Lindsey (Kevin) Moore of Valdosta, Wesley Moulton, Matthew Moulton, Ashley Moulton of Macon, great grandson, Jake Dorsey, two sisters, Evelyn Henry of Valdosta and Helen Matthews of Jacksonville, Florida, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Mike Hiers, four brothers, Thomas Hiers, Kenneth Hiers, Philip Hiers and Cleon Hiers and four sisters, Mazie Connett, Alma Franza, Kathryn Arnold and Ella Mae Carter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday October 1, 2011 at Park Avenue United Methodist Church with the Reverend Craig Rikard, the Reverend Willie Beasley and the Reverend V.L. Daughtery officiating. Private family interment services will be held at Lake Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5 -7 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 100 E.
