Laura Marjorie Standifer, 91, of Valdosta, died on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at the South Georgia Medical Center. She was born in Early County, Blakely, Georgia, on May 20, 1919, to the late Dr. Jack Standifer and the late Sarah Moore Standifer of Blakely. She graduated from Wesleyan College with an AB Degree in Chemisty and earned her Masters Degree in Bacteriology from the University of North Carolina. Ms. Standifer served as Director of the Albany Regional Laboratory until her retirement in 1981. During her professional career, she served on the Advisory Committee for the Medical Laboratory Technology Program for Albany Junior College and was a member of numerous professional organizations including the Southeastern Bacteriology Association, the Georgia Public Health Association and the American Public Health Association. For many years she was an active volunteer with the Library of the Albany Magnet School, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and a guide at Chehaw Wild Animal Park.
Ms. Standifer was a Communicant of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Blakely. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Albany, Georgia for 50 years, St. Elizabeth Chapter, E.C.W., Altar Guild and the Workers for the Shepherd's Table. She was also a member of Peter Early Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Mary "Polly" Meadors and Dr. Jason Meadors of Valdosta; nieces, Rebecca Meadors of Valdosta, Penelope Wright and husband Will of Edisto Island, South Carolina, Laura Ann Davis and husband James of Dahlonega, Georgia; great nieces, Margaret M. Faenza of Atlanta, Rebecca W. Goings and husband Robert of Columbia, South Carolina, great nephew, Brooks S. Wright and wife Ashley of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; great nieces, Katie Davis Walesch and husband Jay of Cumming, Suzanne Davis Drawdy and husband Mike of St. Lucie, Florida. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah S. Davis and a brother, William B. Standifer.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 6, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Blakely with interment to follow at Blakely City Cemetery.
