L. Morris Copeland, 78, of Valdosta, died at his home on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Born and raised in Lowndes County, he was the son of the late Leon and Ollie Lou Barker Copeland. He was a 1956 graduate of Georgia Christian School. He served in the United State Air Force and while stationed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1958, he met and married his bride, the former Bobbie Jean Martin. Upon returning to Lowndes County Mr. Copeland worked briefly at Owens Illinois Paper Mill and then at Georgia Christian School. He bought Barker's Car Wash and re-established the business as Azalea City Car Wash which he operated for 22 years, employing several generations of Copeland's before selling out in 1989. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Copeland worked as a mechanic for his brother at Earl Copeland Garage He thrived on hard work and was passionate about his lifelong hobby of farming livestock, corn, peanuts, soybeans and pecans. Mr. Copeland was a faithful member and deacon of Dasher Church of Christ. He especially enjoyed singing Tenor and serving as song leader at church.
Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Bobbie Jean Copeland of Clyattville; daughters and sons in law, Teresa and Doug Loftis of Moultrie, Debra and Lee Ovaert of Valdosta, Robin and Dean Arnold of Valdosta, Tina and Adam Smith of Adel; a son, Kevin Copeland of Valdosta; daughter, Kimberly Bowers of Atlanta; daughter and son in law, Tiffany and Frank Visker of Mission Viejo, California and a son, Shannon Copeland of Valdosta; brother and sister in law, Richard Earl and Kim Copeland of Valdosta; grandchildren, Vanessa (Justin) Roberson, Chris (Courtney) Loftis, Rebecca (Damien) Serrata, Andrea (Gordon) Strom, Brandon (Amber) Ovaert, Eric Ovaert, Patrick Ovaert, Ashley Arnold, Jordan Arnold, A. J. Smith, Desiree Edwards, Hannah McLean, Mackenzie McLean, Layla Bowers, Gracelyn Copeland and several great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Dasher Church of Christ. Mr. David Nelson will officiate. Burial will follow at Copeland Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
