L. Elbert Hickman

October 16, 1921 — August 17, 2012

L. Elbert Hickman, 90, of Valdosta, died at his residence on Friday, August 17, 2012, after a period of declining health. Born in Rochelle to the late Curtis Elbert & Genevieve Theresa Fenn Hickman, he had lived in this area for the past 40 years. Mr. Hickman attended Middle Georgia College and was a graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, then in Nashville, TN in 1942. He then entered the U.S. Navy where he served as a medic on PC # 479, which fought in the Pacific during WW II. Mr. Hickman returned home to begin his career as a funeral director which spanned more than 60 years and worked at Carson McLane Funeral Home for more than 40 years. He was a member and Past President of the Academy of Graduate Embalmers of Georgia with a Distinguished Service Award, Past President of the Valdosta Kiwanis Club with a Distinguished Service Award; a member of St. John Masonic Lodge, #184; Scottish Rite Valley of Albany; American Legion, Post #13; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1777, and the Patrol Craft Sailors Association. Mr. Hickman was a member of First Baptist Church and the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class there for many years.

Mr. Hickman is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jamie McLeod Hickman, of Valdosta; several cousins and several nephews-in-law and nieces-in-law. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Ann Hickman Weitala; a sister, Evelyn Theresa Hickman; a brother, Curtis Russell Hickman; and a nephew, Curtis Russell Hickman, Jr.

Funeral services for Mr. Hickman will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2012 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Phil West and Rev. Mac Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon, August 19, 2012, from 4 until 6 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 2263 Pineview Dr. Valdosta, GA, 31602 or First Baptist Church, 200 W.
