Kay Elizabeth Barbin Hiers, 60, of Valdosta, GA went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 10, 2009 at South Georgia Medical Center. Kay was born in New Orleans, LA on December 14, 1948, the second child of Doug and faye Barbin. As a child, she lived near Air Force bases in LA, TX, VA, Puerto Rico, Savannah, GA and finally Dothan, AL. After graduating from Jenkins High School in Savannah, Kay completed her Bachelor's Degree in English in 1970 and her Master's Degree in Special Education in 1973 at the University of Georgia. She met her husband, Alfred, at UGA in January of 1970, and they were married in July of that same year. They have two daughters, Erica Leigh Hiers and Elizabeth Hanes Hiers, who currently live in Decatur, GA.
Kay began her teaching career with her husband in Walker County Schools from 1970-1972, after which they moved to College Park where she worked for Clayton County Schools. In the summer of 1973, Kay and Alfred moved to Valdosta where she was employed by Valdosta City Schools for 31 years. She completed her Education Specialist degree from VSU, and early in her career, she was chosen system-wide as Teacher of the Year. After retiring from the public school system in 2001, she served as Director of Crossroads Baptist School until her death.
Traveling was one of her favorite hobbies, both in the states and abroad. Particularly special to her was a mission trip to Ukraine and several trips she took with her sisters and her family. Kay loved singing in the Crossroads choir, and she saw her years at Crossroads School as a special ministry. She also loved going on walks, reading, and working challenging puzzles.
Kay is survived by her husband, Alfred; daughters, Erica and Lisa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Lou Moelchert of Richmond, VA, Lynne and Ralph Stillions of Madison, MS; Ann Barbin of Peachtree City; mother-in-law, Margaret Hiers of Valdosta; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Phyllis Hiers of Valdosta, Mitchell and Linda Hiers of Moultrie and Emily Jean Thomas of Tuscaloosa, AL; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and many beloved friends.
Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M., Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Crossroads Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Alford and Rev. Dennis Rogers presiding. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens in Valdosta. The family will receive friends, Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home.
