Kathryn Mowrey Armstrong, 69, of Valdosta, entered into Eternity to her Lord and Savior’s arms on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Langdale Hospice House following a heroic fight against cancer. She was born in Upland, California on January 15, 1954, and later adopted by the late Robert Ellis and Dorothy Palmer Mowrey of Geneva, Alabama. She was a graduate of Geneva High School and went on to receive a bachelor’s in music education, and a master’s in education from Troy State University. In fact, she was Miss Troy State University in 1976 and went on to represent her school in the Miss Alabama pageant. She was a member of the sorority Alpha Gama Delta, Gamma Sigma Chapter while attending Troy State and served as President. Years later, she would be an advisor for Alpha Gamma Delta here at Valdosta State University. Shortly after her college graduation, Mrs. Armstrong married the love of her life, Luther Armstong Jr. (Bill), and they have been together for 47 years. She taught music in the Valdosta City Schools system for many years and she would coordinate annual trips for her students to places such as Orlando, New York City, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. Students and faculty in the Valdosta City Schools system knew Mrs. Armstrong for her “countdown shirts” that she wore as the end of each school year came to a close. She had a zest for life, was an accomplished pianist, and loved to sing. Many considered her to have the voice of an angel. She was an avid online shopper, especially for her grandchildren. She frequently volunteered at her grandchildren’s school and was affectionately known as “Gammy” by kids and teachers. Mrs. Armstrong was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and served as the Choir Director.
She is survived by her husband, Luther Armstrong Jr. (Bill) of Valdosta; her daughter, Elizabeth Armstrong Davis (Aaron) of Lake Park ; her son, Robert William (Will) Armstrong (Caley) of Pearland, Texas; grandchildren, Emma Kathryn Davis of Lake Park, Abigail Grace Davis of Lake Park, Hunter Rose Armstrong of Pearland, Texas, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Ellis Mowrey and Dorothy Palmer Mowrey.
