Katherine Oglesby Mixson, 99, passed away June 24, 2010 at her home in Valdosta. She was born in Quitman, Georgia, on July 28, 1910, to Juanita Bullard and Zeane Wise Oglesby. Mrs. Mixson was educated in the public schools of Quitman, Georgia and attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Dr. Harry Mixson. A member of Christ Episcopal Church for many years, Mrs. Mixson served on the Altar Guild, taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. She was also a long time member of the General James Jackson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who named her Notable woman of the Year in 2010 for a lifetime of outstanding achievements. In addition to the above, Mrs. Mixson was a member of the First Families of Virginia, the Colonial Dames of America, a charter member of the Jr. Service League, a member of the Junior Red Cross, served as chairman of the Valdosta Medical Auxiliary, and was a member of the Georgia Council for the Arts. Mrs. Mixson will perhaps be best remembered for her tireless efforts in bringing the performing arts to children in South Georgia. She was the founder of Arts Incorporated, and in addition to providing classes in classical ballet, voice and instrumental music, the visual arts and theatre, she arranged many memorable bus trips which gave area children the opportunity to attend out of town Shakespearian plays, operas, symphonies, dance programs, and art exhibits. Mrs. Mixson was not only committed to providing enrichment in the fine arts for all children, regardless of economic support, but also was deeply concerned about struggling young artists who might survive through supplementing their incomes through participation in the Arts Inc. Programs. She expressed continuing gratitude for these fine artists, and also was especially appreciative of her many "wonderful friends" in the community, who worked alongside her to achieve what often seemed to be impossible goals.
Mrs. Mixson is survived by two daughters, Kay Campagna and her husband, James Campagna of St. George Island, Florida, and Juanita Cox and her husband, James Cox of Valdosta. Grandchildren include Dr. James Campagna of Moultrie, Harry Campagna and his wife Margaret Campagna of Woodstock, Georgia, Tommy Campagna of Woodstock, Georgia, Katherine Cox Pyle of Valdosta, Alice Cox Bergeson of Valdosta, James S. Cox III of Austin, Texas, and many great and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her one sister, Mary Elizabeth Slater of Arlington, Virginia.
The family of Mrs. Mixson will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 6 8 p.m. Graveside services and interment will be held on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at 1 p.m., at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
