Mrs. Doris June Thomas Hyder, age 82, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, November 10, 2013 at South Georgia Medical Center.
June was born in Floyd County on May 18, 1931, daughter of the late John William Thomas and Willie Mae Garner Thomas. She married Samuel Nicholas "Nick" Hyder, who preceded her in death on May 16, 1996. She was a retired school teacher and coach, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Valdosta.
A graduate of West Georgia College, June began her teaching career at Alto Park School in Rome. She also taught at McHenry School before joining the faculty at West Rome High School where she taught Physical Education and coached girls' basketball, softball, track, volleyball, and tennis. Many women from Rome have credited "Coach June Hyder" as the mentor that spurred them on to be what they are today.
In 1974, June and Nick left West Rome High when Nick became the head football coach at Valdosta High School. For the next 22 years June devoted herself to Nick and worked as a force behind Nick's "Winning Wildcats". June also taught for 3 years at Lomax-Pinevale Elementary and cherished the "kids" that she loved and taught there. She talked of them until the end.
In addition to her husband and parents, June was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lunie Garner and Bell Holbrook Garner and Richard Allen Thomas and Josie Free Thomas, and a brother, John William Thomas, Jr. She is survived by two nieces, Sydney June Thomas Cohen of New York, New York, and Kendell L. Thomas of Hampton, Virginia, many cousins, and a host of Valdosta Wildcats.
There will be a Celebration of June's life at 5 Neptune Park, Ormond Beach, Florida on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. All friends, family, Wildcats, Chieftains, and "kids" are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Nick and June Hyder Foundation in care of the Valdosta Touchdown Club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice in memory of June.
