Josephine Pendleton Garwood, died February 10, 2007. Josephine was born in Valdosta on February 19, 1947. After graduating from Valdosta High School in 1965, she attended 2 years of college. In 1970, she became a flight attendant with Delta Air Lines. In 1972, she married Michael Saunders Garwood. They have lived and worked in Atlanta since 1980, and both have recently retired, Mike from the Southern Co. and Josephine after 32 years with Delta Air Lines.
Every family should know the blessing of having one member with characteristics of all-encompassing honesty, optimism and compassion. Josephine was that buoyant spirit in her families whose loving and light-hearted ways brightened the lives of those around her. She had the eyes and hands and heart of an artist, so often creating, mostly for others, something she had built or stitched or planted or baked. Yet, she cherished her quiet times for reflection and renewal, especially afternoons at the end of a dock, watching sunsets with a fishing pole in her hands.
The least and last of every living thing, from plants and puppies to people stirred her heart to try to nourish and protect. The beauty of her garden attests to this and Fred & Spud affirm, in loudest dog-praise, a love unmatched in the lives of pampered pets.
Her experiences as a flight attendant taught her the skills of being charming among strangers, eager to help and serve, yet seriously responsible in her job and personal conduct. Josephine never really knew how beautiful she was, she would be quick to dispute any acknowledgment of her good qualities or the extravagant gifts of love and friendship she has so freely and gladly given throughout the years.
It is important for those who have known and loved her to gratefully accept her last and most valuable gift; her testimony of Gods goodness in allowing time to rearrange life’s priorities so that others, in seeing her final faith and peace, might know the Almighty Himself as an all-wise and tender-loving Father. Without her laughter the world has lost a special strain of music. God help us, in the days ahead, to listen and find new hope in the memories of her song of life.
