Joseph Sylvia, 80, of Valdosta passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at his home. He was born on November 18, 1930 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to the late Joseph, Sr. and Mildred Hatch Sylvia and has been a resident of Valdosta for 35 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean Conflict. He retired from SAFT after 31 years of service as a shipping and inventory supervisor.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Dixie Luke Sylvia of Valdosta; a son, Danny McCranie of Savannah; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Tony Carlsen of Lakeland; daughter, Joy Gaston of Valdosta; grandchildren, Dale Vickers, Ashley Vickers, Yeager Gaston, Hunter Klase, Tori Carlsen; brother-in-law, Dean Luke of Valdosta; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lee and Billy Turner and Willene and Jim Lewis; brother-in-law, Thomas Luke; sister-in-law, Jessie Luke all of Nashville; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Joseph Sylvia will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie Scarbrough officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can by made to Grace Hospice. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
