Joseph Raymond (Joe) Slocum, Sr.

Joseph Raymond Slocum, Sr., 88, died March 7, 2015, at Dasher Heart Center, Valdosta, GA. Mr. Slocum was born in Avon Park, FL, on January 7, 1927, to the late Lloyd and McRae Davis Slocum. The family came to Valdosta when Joe was a child to open a furniture business. After graduating from Valdosta High School in 1943, he attended North Georgia College. In 1945 he entered the Army and served in WWII during the occupation of Japan. After the war, he met Pauline Peacock whom he married and had three sons. He gave his life to Christ at a young age and was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He spent his career with the family business, Slocum Furniture. Joe was a great success at all his pursuits: fishing, selling furniture, and loving on his grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Jody (Beth) Slocum of Cordele, GA and Scott Slocum of Valdosta, GA; daughter-in-law, Kay Slocum of Tifton, GA; sister, Sylvia Ann Slocum, Valdosta, GA. He has 8 grandchildren: Kathi (Bryan) Gaps of Columbus, GA; Katy (Joey) Richter of Brooklet, GA; Amy (John) Goode of Norcross, GA; Julie (Erik) von Hellens of Thomasville, GA; Jay Slocum of Aiken, SC; Becky (Eric) Mason of Denver, CO.; Claire (Ryan) Byrnes of Tifton, GA; and Stephanie Slocum of Culver City, CA; and 12 great-grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Polly and son Dr. Jeff Slocum of Tifton, GA; brothers Dean, Carlton, and Al Slocum and a sister, Wilma Slocum Wilkerson, all of Valdosta, GA.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 13, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the Carson McLane Funeral Home Chapel in Valdosta with burial to follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Reverend Bob Willis will officiate. Visitation will be held immediately before the service from 12:30-2 p.m. at the funeral home.
