Jon Corn Schroer, 91 of Ray City, died on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Louis Smith Memorial Hospital in Lakeland, GA. Born on September 11, 1913 in Valdosta, she was the daughter of the late A. D. Corn Sr. and Marion Burton Corn. She was a lifetime member of First Christian Church where she was the first woman elder. She graduated from Georgia State Womens College (now Valdosta State University) and Emory University with a Master of Arts at the age of 20. In 1957 she was selected as Valdosta’s first Woman of the Year. She taught in the Valdosta public schools and at Valdosta State University. She assisted her husband in the family business, Schroer Plant Farms and at Fred Schroer Pecan Farm. She was active in Wymodausis Club and honorary member of Kappa Delta Sorority and president of the PTA.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Joan Schroer Ferguson and Col. H. Bruce Ferguson USAF Ret. of Spokane WA, Gretchen Schroer Bryant and William D. Bryant of Atlanta, GA, Emily Schroer Dacus and G. Allen Dacus of Ray City, GA; one son and his wife, Fred William Schroer, III and Ruth Waters Schroer of Johnston, RI; 11 grandchildren, Craig Ferguson of Bay St. Louis, MS, Todd Ferguson of Canoga Park, CA, Eric Ferguson of Spokane, WA, Leigh Bryant Cook of Decatur, GA, Andrew Bryant of Kennesaw, GA, Fred Schroer IV of Johnston, RI, Lisa Schroer Suzio of Meridan, CT, Melissa Bentley Stubbs of Valdosta, GA, Shannon Bentley Cribbs of Valdosta, GA, Emily Bentley Kent of Warner Robbins, GA, David Bentley, Jr. of Kingston, TN; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Nel Corn Lawlor of Astoria, NY; sister-in-law, Trudie Veatch of Valdosta, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Herbert and Wilma Schroer of Lake Park, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred William Schroer, Jr., a brother, A. D. Corn, Jr., a sister, Bette Corn Salter and a brother-in-law, Walter F. Schroer, Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January, 19, 2005 at the First Christan Church with Dr. Milton West officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow at the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
